Summer is coming to a close and CJ’s on the Bay is having a good old-fashioned barbecue to celebrate. The air of Marco Island will be filled with the mouth watering smell of barbecue as the Grillin’ and Chillin’ Chef’s Extreme BBQ takes place from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at CJ’s.

“This is our extreme barbecue for the locals,” said Laura Owen, executive chef and restaurant manager for CJ’s. “We wanted to have a fun event before the kids go back to school so we thought why not have a big summertime-style cookout and have one last hurrah.”

The large outdoor grill at CJ’s will be slow cooking bone-in prime angus beef ribs all day. Later the succulent ribs will be joined by whole chickens, baby bratwurst, shrimp and veggie kabobs. While the meat may be the main event, the sweet roasted Delaware silver queen corn will be just as memorable.

“I am getting the corn from Oakes market in Naples and I’m really excited about it,” Owen said. “I had the silver queen a couple of weeks ago and it was so sweet and tender.”

This is the second buffet style cookout that CJ’s is holding this summer. The first was a Shark Luau in June which was well attended. This time there will be four different buffet line times in order to keep the wait down.

“The line got a little long during the shark roast so we are having four times to get people moving through the buffet,” Owen said. “We would love people to make reservations so we know how many to plan for.”

The buffet will feature roasted potatoes, veggies and several dessert selections. There will also be items to make S’mores. The Budweiser girls will be on site and there will be drink specials throughout the evening.

To get everyone into the summer cookout spirit, there will be games such as a water balloon toss where people will form teams. They will form lines and throw the balloons back and forth until the balloons are dropped. There will also be a badminton tournament with a giant badminton set.

“We are trying really hard to do things in the summer for the locals,” Owen said. “The locals love it this time of year because they get their island back and we love the locals because they support us so much. We want to give them something fun and make it a good value.”

The Grillin’ and Chillin’ BBQ is $30 per person and includes the full buffet as well as one draft beer or house wine.

Buffet times are 6, 6:30, 7 and 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 16. Reservations are required. Live music will be provided by Duncan Wheeler.

“We love our locals and the people that support us as much as they do,” Owen said. “It’s going to be a good time with good food and live music.”
