NAPLES — In more than 20 years on the bench, Brien Crowder has lost track of all the basketball all-star games coached.

All the games he's been involved with, though, shared a few common threads -- lots of offense, not much defense. Crowder doesn't expect Wednesday night's Naplesnews.com Collier County All-Star game to be much different.

“They're always fun,” said Crowder, the first-year Immokalee coach who will guide the boys North all-stars. “I hope it's high-scoring. In an all-star game, you want to showcase the talent and go out and have a lot of fun.”

The fifth annual all-star games feature 54 boys and girls seniors from Collier County high schools. If Wednesday night's games resemble last year's, the fans will be entertained.

Last year, the South won the girls game on a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Lely's Victoria Howard. The South boys won a high-scoring, up-and-down game in which the teams combined for 170 points.

The boys play at 6 p.m. at Community School, followed by the girls game.

“I think the teams are pretty evenly matched,” said Gulf Coast coach Mark Woodruff, who'll guide the girls North team. “We've only had one practice together, so it could get sloppy. It will be up and down the court, mostly.”

Woodruff, who just completed his first year with the Sharks, will have the opportunity to coach his five Gulf Coast seniors one more time. Included on the North team is Sharks' all-time leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker Riki Carach.

Carach, along with teammates Kirsten Langdon and Karina Mambuca, played in last week's South Florida Association of Basketball Coaches all-star game. In the SFABC game, a team of Collier players took on the all-stars from Lee and Charlotte counties at Bishop Verot.

“Up (at the SFABC game), the quality is a little better with the top seniors from the three-county area,” Woodruff said. “But here, they're playing with their Collier County rivals and against their rivals one last time. Both games have something special.”

Crowder will coach the boys North team with players from Barron Collier, Community School, Gulf Coast, Immokalee, Naples and Palmetto Ridge. Golden Gate coach Joe Consolino will coach six of his Titans on the South squad, along with players from Lely, Seacrest and St. John Neumann.

Joining the Sharks on Woodruff's North team are players from Community School and Lely. The South girls, coached by Neumann's Shannon McFee, consist of all-stars from Barron Collier, Golden Gate, Naples and the Celtics.

“I'm glad I get to (coach) the team,” Crowder said. “We're playing two 20-minute halves, so I'm going to try to let everybody play 16 minutes a piece. Whoever has the hot hand or who's playing well together will play the last four minutes.”
