Youngsters, from 6, to oldsters who were coy about their age, had their heads shaved in the fight against kids cancer at Cathy O’Clarke’s on Saturday as part of the St. Baldrick’s National Shave Day.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation conducts a national fundraiser annually to help raise funds in the fight against kids cancer.
Mike Assaf, coordinator for Marco and Naples, was pleased with the Marco turnout.
From the 20 Marco shavees, more than $6,400 was raised and the four shavees in Naples raised more than $2,000 in a first-time event. And more is expected.
“After the event last year money kept coming in,” Assaf said. “We had $5,000 after the day, but ended up with more than $12,000.”
Some $3,000 came from the St. Patrick’s Day festivites at Cathy O’Clarke’s.
“Owners Mel and Cathy (Slawik) allowed us to keep the $5 cover charge from each customer,” Assaf said. Assaf and volunteers will be doing it again on Wednesday.
Assaf’s wife Pat became the first woman to get her near shoulder-length hair shaved.
“Mike talked me into it so I have been letting my hair grow since January,” she said. She chided the crowd a bit when they said she looked better.
“Gorman’s Bald Tires” took a team approach. Employees from Gorman’s Auto Service signed up, with a little suggesting from owners Tim and Cathy. They joked that the Gormans had it on the employment application.
Tim Gorman and employees Jason Carlin, Justin Sisley, Warren Marsh and Adam Madden had their locks shaved. Also taking part under the Gorman banner were Sean Gorman, 13, and Marsh’s nephews, Nova, 9 and Matthew, 6, the youngest shavee.
Brady Wilhite, an 8-year-old from St. Louis, had his head shaved for the fourth time. His mom Linda said Wilhite got the urge from information he saw at his dentist’s office in St. Louis. Sine then he has had his head shaved in St. Louis, Jupiter and twice on Marco Island where they have been vacationing the last two years.
Mike Whitmyer of the Marco Beach Bocce Club went bald for the cause after his friends raised $600 from a bocce tournament on Wednesday.
Gregg Mann had additional help while getting his head shaved by Jessica Clarke of South Beach Salon. His daughter, Delaney Rose, 3, kept combing his falling locks away.
Clarke also shaved Pat Assaf’s head, while Russ Azzolina of Marco Island Barber Shop shaved the other 18.
In Naples, Marco’s Mike O’Regan supplied the location, his Paddy Murphy’s Irish Pub, then had his head shaved. Also having their heads shaved were Paddy Murphy, Spencer Cootware and Jim Benham.
In its second year on Marco, Assaf thinks momentum is growing.
“On Marco it is going great guns,” he said. “We’ve made new contacts and more people want to be heavily involved next year.”
