By now everyone knows how Marco Island City Council members deliberated in closed-door session on the touchy matter of where boaters should be allowed to moor.

We also know, thanks to Florida open records laws that require transcripts of such meetings to be made public later, some members of council discussed strategies that may have contested the spirit, if not the letter, of those same public-access safeguards.

Now, what to do?

No one on Marco so far has come forward to file a formal complaint, which the Southwest Florida State Attorney’s Office says is required before it can investigate.

We believe prosecutors ought to go ahead and do it. This is a matter of public interest, and the same public records that would serve as the foundation for a citizen complaint are open and available to the State Attorney’s Office. No further prodding or petitioning ought to be required.
